History of the Chapel

JACKSON STREET CHAPEL

This historical chapel was built in 1863 on the corner of Colonville Road and Tobacco Drive (Loomis Road) in Sheridan Township and was named the “Herrick Baptist Church.”

In about 1946 it was moved 10 miles by’ draft horses to its current location (just 3 blocks east of the Doherty Hotel) at 504 E. 6th Street, in the village of Clare, where it was later known as the “Seventh Day Adventist.” The Clare Sentinel, Sept. 17, 1948 had an article that said they purchased the frame structure 2 years ago and moved it to the above site. Since moving it they had lowered the ceilings, bricked the exterior, installed oak flooring, put in restrooms. A Clare Sentinel article, May 6, 1949, announced that the newly remodeled church would be dedicated on May 7, 1949.

The chapel was later purchased by the Clare Masons and was used for monthly meetings. It was eventually put on the market and purchased in 2015 by Dan and Laurie Shively.

Over the last 3 years Dan & Laurie have worked to restore the building to its former self. As you enter the sanctuary through antique pocket doors, you will see the added antique pews which provide comfortable seating for up to 80; stained glass windows; lighting; and lecterns. The chapel offers period time appropriate details with modern comfort amenities. There is a newer heating and air conditioning system to keep everyone comfortable in every seeason. The Bridal Room is updated; and the basement is all set up with tables, chairs and prep kitchen. This facility is available for your function by contacting Dan or Laurie Shively.
